How To Play American Roulette
Introduction

There is no consensus regarding how the modern game of roulette evolved, however the word roulette is French and means "little wheel”. The mathematician Blaise Pascal devised the first roulette wheel in an experiment to create a perpetual motion device. After creating this spinning wheel, one of Pascal's friends noticed that the machine had great potential for a gambling game. The game became popular in France during the 1700's and quickly spread throughout Europe.
Basic Rules
American roulette is a very simple game played on a wheel with 38 slots representing numbers from 1 to 36 plus a 0 and 00. The numbers in the wheel are alternately colored red and black plus a 0 and 00, which are green. Bets can be placed on individual numbers or groups of numbers. To bet, simply place your chips on the numbered table layout. To win, the player must predict where the ball will come to rest in the Roulette wheel.
There are many different ways to place roulette bets. Each bet covers a different set of numbers. All bets are in one of two categories: Inside Bets and Outside Bets. The following are possible Roulette wagers divided by their category:
Inside Bets
These are bets located inside the 36 numbered rectangles and on the Roulette layout. There are six possible inside bets.
Straight Up (One-Number Bet): Place a bet directly in the center of any individual number or 0. If the ball stops on your number, you will be paid 35:1.
Split Bet (Two-Number Bet): Place a bet on the dividing line of two numbers and you can wager on two adjacent numbers at one time. If the ball stops on either number, you will be paid 17:1.
Street Bet (Three-Number Bet) : Place a bet on the outer right boundary of the betting table, next to a row of three numbers and you can wager on three consecutive numbers at one time. If the ball stops on any of the three numbers, you will be paid 11:1.
Corner Bet (Four-Number Bet): Place your bet at the corner of four intersecting numbers to wager on four numbers at one time. If the ball stops on any of the four numbers, you will be paid 8:1.
5 Line (Five-Number Bet): Place your bet on the outer boundry line to cover 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. If the ball stops on any of the five numbers, you will be paid 6:1.
Line Bet/6 Line (Six-Number Bet): Place your bet on the outer boundary line where the line dividing two rows ends to wager on six numbers at the same time. If the ball stops on any of the six numbers, you will be paid 6:1.
Line Bet (Six-Number Bet): Place your bet on the outer right boundary line where the line dividing two rows ends to wager on six numbers at the same time. If the ball stops on any of the six numbers, you will be paid 5:1.
Outside Bets
These are bets made outside of the numbered areas. They are at the bottom and the left side of the betting layout. Should the ball come to a rest on the 0 or 00, all outside bets lose. There are five possible outside bets.
Column Bet: Place a bet on any of the three boxes marked 2 to 1 to wager on the entire column of twelve numbers above that space. If the ball stops on any of the twelve numbers, you will be paid 2:1.
Dozens Bet: Place a bet on any of the three boxes marked 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12 to wager on the group of twelve numbers directly above that space, 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36 respectively. If the ball stops on a number within the corresponding group, you will be paid 2:1.
Red or Black: Place a bet on the Red or Black diamond to wager on all numbers of that specific color. If the ball stops on any number with your color, you will be paid 1:1.
Odd or Even: Place a bet on the Odd or Even rectangles to wager on all corresponding numbers at once. If the ball stops on any of those numbers, you will be paid 1:1.
High or Low: Place a bet on the 1-18 (low) or 19-36 (high) rectangles to wager on that entire group of numbers. If the ball stops on a number within the range you have selected, you will be paid 1:1.
Spin the Wheel: After you place your bet(s), the Roulette wheel spins with the ball spinning in the opposite direction. The ball will come to rest in one of the slots determining the winning number or colour. A marker will show the winning number on the table. All winning wagers will be paid and losing wagers cleared.
